The Woven Tide is not simply a collaboration between Venjara Carpets — a bespoke rug maker with over six decades of experience — and contemporary veteran artist Jaideep Mehrotra. It is a piece that has been years in the making.

Bringing in the fourth generation of Venjara Carpets, Aishaa Nensey was inspired by Jaideep’s work as a child, long before developing her own understanding of contemporary art. After joining Venjara, she had a vision for a new chapter for the brand — one in which carpets could transcend simple utility, and become a medium for artistic expression. Was it possible to push boundaries and create a piece which was neither carpet nor sculpture but existed somewhere in between? Was it possible to create something tactile and evocative, something beautiful but also useful, something that could be captured by this medium, and this medium alone? And so The Woven Tide came to be.

It is neither just a carpet, nor just a work of art. It is an expressive dialogue between contemporary artistic expression and inherited craft.Taking a familiar shag rug, the artist transforms it into a poetic landscape. It is a wave meeting a shore; the textures of foam and sand and salt water brilliantly captured through multiple weaving techniques. The rug’s irregular, unconventional silhouette brings the sensation of a beach to any living space, marrying striking sculptural presence with practical, everyday function. The work blurs the line between utility and art, comfort and uniqueness, turning a practical object into an immersive interior statement.
